Daniel Martineschen was born in Curitiba, Paraná. He is a translator and Professor of the German course at UFSC. He won the 2021 Jabuti Award for Best Translation with the verses of West-Eastern Divan (2020) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In addition to Goethe, he has also translated works by Aleida Assmann, Sabine Richebächer, Jörn Rüsen, Anna Seghers, Detlev Claussen, Gerd Kohlhepp, Mathias Konzett, M. Huber, Christian Russau, K. Matzler, Friedrich Kittler, Detlev Holz (Walter Benjamin), and Sylk Schneider. This interview is a dialogue about translation, divided into two parts. The first part addresses themes related to translation in various cases, such as Goethe, where he asserts in West-Eastern Divan the existence of three types of translation. He also discusses Walter Benjamin's statement regarding the afterlife of the text through translation. Furthermore, experiences with collaborative translation are shared. The second part addresses some aspects related to the paratext of Effi Briest. Finally, Martineschen concludes the interview with recommendations for aspiring translators.
