Résumé

The relevance of agroecological strategies for conserving agrobiodiversity in areas with rich biodiversity, such as the Cerrado-Caatinga ecotone, is not well studied. The objective of this study is to understand the uses and management of rural agroecosystems in Southwest Piauí, Brazil, focusing on the relationships between biological and cultural diversity within the context of expanding the agricultural frontiers in Matopiba. The fieldwork data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 18 informants, exploratory walks through the agroecosystems, participant observation, and photographic documentation. The key strategies for managing agrobiodiversity by peasants include safeguarding biological diversity (i.e. native seeds, and agricultural species and varieties), and the multifunctionality of managed spaces (i.e. plant harvesting and animal husbandry in the communal areas of Cerrado and Caatinga). As a result, we identified over 80 species cultivated in small-farms and home gardens within the scope of managed plants, along with high intraspecific diversity.  These practices reflect a co-evolutionary relationship between peasant farmers and their environment, where diversity is essential for the climate resilience of agroecosystems and the food security of communities. The expansion of soybean monoculture represents severe threats through deforestation, loss of communal territories, and the homogenisation of cultivated species, endangering both ecological and biocultural diversity.

  • Thiago Batista de Sousa, PhD Candidate, Agroecology and Territorial Development (PPGADT), Federal University of the São Francisco Valley, Espaço Plural, Juazeiro, BA, Brazil

    PhD candidate in the Postgraduate Program in Agroecology and Territorial Development. Holds a Master's degree in Environment and Rural Development from the University of Brasília (UnB), with a final dissertation titled 'Across the grounds of the Cerrado-Caatinga ecotone: peasant livelihoods and the safeguarding of socio-agrobiodiversity in southwestern Piauí.' Holds a Bachelor's degree in Rural Education with a focus on Human and Social Sciences (LEDOC) from the Federal University of Piauí, Campus Professora Cinobelina Elvas (UFPI - CPCE), Bom Jesus - PI, with a thesis titled 'Peasant Knowledge and the Management of Agroecosystems in the Lourenço Community in Redenção do Gurguéia - PI.' Member of the Agroecology and Arts Center of the Gurgueia Valley since 2020 (NAGU/UFPI). Participated as a scholarship holder in the Pedagogical Residency Program (UFPI-RP/CAPES). Volunteered in the extension project Sowing Agroecology: rescuing knowledge, seeds, and flavors. Worked as a teaching assistant in the discipline of Agroecology and Rural Development.

  • Andrea Leme da Silva, Visiting professor, Graduate Program for the Development and Environment, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Natal, RN, Brazil
    Andréa Leme da Silva holds a degree in Biological Sciences from the Federal University of São Carlos and a Ph.D. in Ecology from the State University of São Paulo.  From 2005 to 2007, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the State University of Júlio de Mesquita Filho, Brazil, and completed a sandwich internship at the Institute for Fisheries Management and Coastal Community Development, Aalborg University, Denmark. She has worked with civil society organizations and international technical cooperation agencies to support indigenous and traditional peoples. She is currently a visiting professor at the Postgraduate Program for the Development and Environment (PRODEMA) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Her research focus is on political ecology, traditional/local ecological knowledge and interfaces with natural resources management, and environmental governance.
  • Joxleide Mendes da Costa Pires Coutinho, Adjunct Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, Federal University of Piauí (UFPI), Bom Jesus, PI, Brazil
    Graduated in Biological Sciences (Full Licentiate) from the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI/2001). Obtained a Master's degree in Development and Environment (Research Line: Biodiversity and Use of Natural Resources) in 2005 from the same institution, and a PhD in Biodiversity and Evolution (Evolution and Dynamics of Biological Diversity) from the Emilio Goeldi Museum Institute (MPEG-PA/2020), as a member of the research group in Ecology, Management, and Conservation of Vegetation in the Amazon.  She is an Adjunct Professor (Field: Botany and Plant Ecology) at the Federal University of Piauí, Campus Professora Cinobelina Elvas (CPCE), in Bom Jesus/PI, affiliated with the Department of Biological Sciences. Currently, her research focuses on the dynamics of savannas in the Mid-North region (PI, MA, PA, and AP). She is an associate researcher in the Biodiversity Program of the Northeastern Ecotonal Tropics (BIOTEN) and a member of its affiliated association (ABIOTEN). At CPCE, she serves on the Academic Committee and coordinates the Study Group on the Flora of the Upper and Middle Gurguéia (GPFlora), conducting primary surveys in floristics, phytosociology, phenology, and phytogeography since 2008. She was a scholarship holder and later an active researcher at Site 10 of the Long-Term Ecological Research Program (PIE/PELD-Site 10) of CNPq from 2001 to 2011. She coordinated the Botany Laboratory (LaBot-CPCE) and was a founding member of the Regional Plant Collection (Vale do Gurguéia Sectoral Herbarium - HVG) from April 2012 to February 2016. She has expertise in the fields of Botany, Vegetation Ecology, Phytogeography, and Nature Conservation, with an emphasis on studying the structure, dynamics, and functioning of vegetation; biological conservation of the Cerrado, Caatinga, and ecotones; species distribution patterns; spatial heterogeneity; and diversity. Her primary research focuses include biodiversity, melittophilous flora, extractivism, sustainability, and environmental education. She is the mother of two children, aged 10 and 6.
