Reflecting about agricultural science education: the case of the Federal University of Pará
Keywords:
Family farming, Education, Agronomy course, Rural developmentAbstract
This article intends to present a reflection about agricultural science education based on the experience of the Agronomy Course of the Federal Universityof Pará offered since 2000. However, fifteen years after its beginning this educational proposal is experiencing a crisis as it has been revealed through flyers and speeches of current and former students requesting more technical knowledge in the curricula. Based on some of Pierre Bourdieu's concepts, some interpretive hypotheses for this crisis are suggested, and it is claimed that agricultural professional education towards sustainable development of family farming should be conceived as a social intervention practice supported by research coexisting and dialoguing with the transformations of the rural society in which it is embedded.
