Translation into perspective: translation theory proofreading challenges

Abstract

This article reflects upon the proofreading process of the book Translation into Perspective: A Dialogue between Translators and Theoretical Concepts, organised by Liliam Cristina Marins and Aline Scarmen Uchida. Published in 2020 by Solar dos Livros, the volume comprises nine chapters written by different authors and translated by seventeen translators, many of whom worked in collaboration. Based on my experience as one of the proofreaders, I seek to identify the main challenges emerging from this collective process. The concept of collaboration is here understood as the key element synthesising the conception, execution, and materialisation of the project, since the dialogical dynamic established among organisers, translators, and proofreaders proved decisive for the successful outcome. Considering the interdependent network of agents engaged in the production of the volume (Latour, 1994; 2012), I argue that translation, as a dialogical experience, must be conceived both as an act of exchange and of communication.
