The necessity to update the translation of “Art as device”, by Viktor Shklovsky

This work aims to provide a history followed by a comparative analysis of the translations into Brazilian Portuguese of Viktor Shklovsky’s classic essay “Art as Device” (1917). The study will be based on the translations available in Portuguese, comparing them with each other and with the Russian original. Although there have been recent direct translations that have sought to rethink the translation of the central concept of the text (ostranenie), it can be seen that the translation made from one of the French editions of the text is still very influential in discussions about Russian Formalism in the context of literary studies in Brazil. Therefore, it is intended to point out the importance of updating translations of canonical texts of literary theory with a view to greater terminological precision and, consequently, a refinement of the understanding of the concepts and ideas proposed by the Formal School. We will try to problematize translation and the role of the translator, pointing to the possible consequences of indirect translation for the understanding of the concept of ostranenie.
