O presente artigo visa abordar a resposta de John Burnet e Alfred Edward Taylor ao “Problema Socrático” – isto é, às questões relativas ao pensamento e a vida do Sócrates histórico. Ambos são os principais representantes da denominada “Escola Escocesa”, bastante influente no início do século passado e que deixou marcas no estudo dessa importante questão da Filosofia Antiga. Para expor sua visão, será analisado o modo como os autores tratam as quatro principais fontes acerca da pessoa de Sócrates: Xenofonte, Aristóteles, Aristófanes e Platão. Feita essa análise, será possível compreender como Taylor e Burnet reconstroem a vida e o pensamento de Sócrates – com destaque para a Teoria das Ideias e a Doutrina Socrática da Alma. Por fim, o artigo tratará das razões pelas quais a posição da Escola Escocesa não é mais adotada por nenhum historiador da filosofia na contemporaneidade.
