Quilombo da Gamboa: the struggle for housing in the city of Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

The Quilombo da Gamboa Popular Housing Project is located in Little Great Africa, in the port region of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The Quilombo da Gamboa was born from the struggle of social movements for popular housing, especially the Central of Popular Movements (CMP) and the Union for Popular Housing (UMP). This struggle won the destination of six properties of the Union for the construction of popular housing for more than 100 families under the Program My Home My Life Entities. Currently, 17 families live in temporary houses built in partnership with the NGO Teto, while the project of the MCMV Entities, coordinated by the CMP, advances. In Quilombo da Gamboa still works a solidarity kitchen and a community garden. Political and cultural activities are carried out in support of the surrounding occupations.
