Abstract

This paper reports some exemplary data from a research project into the acquisition of phonological skills among Brazilian students of English as a foreign language. The data are contextualized in two ways: in relation to two basic concepts and interlanguage studies (transfer and equivalence classification) and in terms of the criteria that underlie the notion of English as an international language. These ideas are discussed and the data from the project offer a concrete way of looking at the features involved and their implications for research in Inter phonology and for foreign language teaching.
