O MODO DE TRADUZIR DE ODORICO MENDES:
OBSERVAÇÕES ACERCA DO CANTO I DA ENEIDA BRASILEIRA

A proposta deste artigo é apresentar observações acerca do método de tradução de Manuel Odorico Mendes. Para tanto, recorremos à recepção e crítica de alguns autores importantes sobre as versões do tradutor e atentamos para as indicações sobre seus procedimentos de tradução, expostos por ele nos prólogos e introduções das traduções. Finalmente, fizemos uma análise preliminar de algumas soluções tradutórias para o Canto I da epopeia de Virgílio, a Eneida, baseando-nos nos dois métodos de tradução propostos por Schleiermacher. Os recursos utilizados por Odorico Mendes nos contextos analisados permitem supor que as suas estratégias tradutórias se alinhavam ao modo de traduzir conhecido por “estrangeirização”, que fora proposto por Schleiermacher no início do século XIX.
