This article presents a translation of O. Henry’s short story “Mammon and the Archer”. The short story, set in the Gilded Age, was originally published in the newspaper New York World, and then in the acclaimed collection The Four Million in 1906 (Sianturi, 2023; Galens, 2003). In the short story, the nouveau-riche entrepreneur Anthony Rockwall is willing to prove his son that money is a tool capable of reaching almost everything. Although Richard frequents high society, he cannot declare his love to elite girl Miss Lantry, fearing to be rejected for not belonging to this exclusive social circle. Miss Lantry is about to leave to Europe, and Richard tries hastily to get her engaged to him. Besides the literary sophisticated technique, the narrative, as Sianturi (2023) observes, presents a complex interplay between economic, social and cultural capitals.
