O livro Acts of Indentity: Creole-based approaches to language and ethnicity (1985) de Le Page e Tabouret-Keller é o resultado de 30 anos de pesquisa sobre o comportamento linguístico de pessoas e suas crenças no tocante à língua e à identidade. O quinto capítulo do livro (Towards a general theory of the evolution of languages), tem o foco na teoria da evolução de línguas. Nele, os autores consideram como o comportamento idiossincrático de um certo indivíduo reflete uma postura com relação a grupos, causas e tradições. A pesquisa de Le Page e Tabouret-Keller foi conduzida em diferentes comunidades linguísticas a fim de responder a dois principais questionamentos: i) de que forma os indivíduos estudados na pesquisa podem ser considerados membros de comunidades linguísticas? E, ii) como seu comportamento linguístico pode ser descrito como uma propriedade de suas comunidades?
