THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF HISTORICAL-DIALECTIC MATERIALISM IN THE ANALYSIS OF THE BRAZILIAN PENITENTIARY SYSTEM

By placing the Brazilian penitentiary system within the framework of mechanisms for controlling human freedom, which threaten the hegemony of capital, this article discusses the relevance of the research method in the face of this phenomenon. Guided by the ontological perception of social reality, this study aimed to emphasize the importance of resorting to historical-dialectical materialism as a fundamental element of an analysis that focuses on the possibility of a radical transformation of this reality, which is based on punitivism, racism and the criminalization of poverty, for the benefit of the bourgeois class. In light of the socio-historical elements that underlie the constitution of the penal system, we limited the analysis to some current data on public safety. Regarding the methodology, we relied on bibliographic and documentary research. We conclude that resorting to historical-dialectical materialism becomes essential to unveil the repressive role of the State, highlighting the need for the decriminalization of behaviors, with a view to reversing the worsening situation of the Brazilian penal system.
