Call for the Thematic Dossier “Vozes e Tecnologias” - "Voz e Cena" Journal (Dec/2021)

2021-04-15

Voz e Cena, an electronic journal in Performing Arts with free access and peer-review, with no submission or publication fees, will receive articles for the Thematic Dossier "Vozes e Tecnologias" until November 02 to compose its second volume of 2021 (July-December). The journal publishes texts in Portuguese, Spanish, English, Italian and French.

The journal's editorial line is focused on artistic and scientific research about performing arts experiments and proposals in which vocal practices have a preponderant role. This dossier is specifically interested in the mediation of technological objects that cross the relationship between voice, scene and audience. The notion of technology adopted is part of the field of instrumental technology, ranging from various hacks that, coupled to the bodies of actors and actresses, transform the sound of the voice to cutting-edge digital devices capable of synthesizing, altering and amplifying the voice on stage and in the rehearsal spaces.

The dossier aims to encompass pedagogical, creative and aesthetic aspects of the voice mediated by technologies in historical or contemporary perspectives. In fact, the context of isolation that we went through, due to the COVID-19 pandemic,  accentuated the use of digital tools. Between "apocalyptic" and "integrated", digital resources were being appropriated by artists with the primary objective of keeping the link with the public. The remote use of voice and word is progressively generating new poetics, from the use of the microphone as a connection object to the integration of sound distortions, voluntary and involuntary, which engage new listening regimes and bring new perspectives of reflection on the tangencies of vocal and digital spheres. Research on the theme "Voices and Technologies" in the performing arts is therefore part of the emerging interdisciplinary field of the digital humanities.

This thematic dossier is interested in:

- Intermediation of mechanical, analog and digital devices that transform the voice into artistic processes;
- Ethical and political implications of the relationship between technologies and voice;
- Voice and gender and sexuality technologies;
- Presences and absences of the mediated voice;
- Intermediate voice reception modes;
- Intermediate voice relations in the digital/remote theater scene: dialogues with cinema, TV and radio;
- Impact and relationships of new technologies on voice teaching methodologies, both in face-to-face and virtual teaching-learning environments.
- Aesthetic, cultural and historical aspects of the interactions between voice and technology in performing arts.

The Editorial Committee of this Thematic Dossier is formed by: Ana Wegner, PhD professor (ATER) at the Université de Poitiers (FR); Charles Feitosa, PhD professor at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO); Daiane Dordete Steckert Jacobs, PhD associate professor at the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC); Tiago Mundim, PhD collaborating professor of the Postgraduate Program in Performing Arts at the University of Brasília (UnB).
