Total quality management in the context of oncology nursing: Integrative Review

Total Quality Management applied to oncology nursing contributes to the enhancement of patient care in cancer treatment, integrating technological innovations and considering patient perceptions. The purpose of this review was to map and describe studies on Total Quality Management in the context of oncology nursing, covering the period from 2013 to 2023, identifying characteristics, aspects of quality, and application in nursing management. An integrative literature review was conducted in December 2023, using the descriptors Total Quality Management and Oncology Nursing in the MEDLINE®, LILACS®, IBECS®, and BDENF® databases. Twelve studies were identified and grouped into three categories: Technology and Innovation in Nursing Care (n=5); Patient Perception and Satisfaction (n=4); and Palliative Care and Nursing Interventions (n=3). The efficacy of technology in process optimization was noted, while patient perception underscored the importance of care quality. In palliative care, the focus is on the role of nursing interventions in improving quality of life. This study identifies opportunities, demonstrating the relevance of Total Quality Management and quantitative tools in the integrated improvement of oncological care, combining technological innovation with individual patient perspectives.
