Proposal for Improving the Management of a Pediatric Emergency Care Setting

Abstract

In most countries, the volume in emergency services has been going through a dramatic increase, as a result, managers have sought alternatives adopting process improvement methodologies, attempting to provide better service. The Lean methodology establishes what is value for the client, eliminating waste and seeking the continued enhancement of the processes. The present study aims at proposing possible improvements in managing patient care at the pediatric emergency service of Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Porto Alegre, using the Lean approach. Has been carried out a systematic review to broaden knowledge on the topic and, subsequently, an organizational assessment, which enabled a deep understanding of how the hospital unit works. The value stream mapping methodology was applied and ultimately, a plan of action was created in order to achieve the defined targets. According to the results, the presence of waste can be observed in all stages of patient care.

    Mestra em Tecnologias da Informação e Gestão em Saúde pela Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre (UFCSPA), especialista (MBA) em Gestão em Saúde pela Universidade La Salle e graduada em Farmácia pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). Atuação em Análises Clínicas e Diagnóstico Laboratorial, com ênfase em Imunologia, Gestão em Saúde e Auditorias.
