The revolutionary patience of Lélia Gonzalez, interpreter from Brazil

Abstract

This article brings together some of the reflections of Lélia Gonzalez (1935-1994), presented in an interview given to the National Journal of the Unified Black Movement – MNU, in 1991. This speech was made in Salvador, by Jônatas Conceição da Silva (1952-2009), a militant of the Black Movement of Bahia, and edited by Edson Cardoso (1949-), who worked in the black press as an editor in several magazines. The main theme raised by Lélia in her speech concerns the ethical issue within the Black Movement, from a historical perspective and African ancestry, with emphasis on issues related to politics, culture and subjectivities. Thus, this text seeks to contribute to the literature by highlighting the inseparable relationship between the production of knowledge and political action, through the proposals of black feminist epistemology, such as the ethics of care and responsibility, dialogue and lived experience, which understand theory as a fundamental part of the practical struggle.
