The controversy over the possible typification and punishment of a type of abuse of power of religious authority represents an increasingly visible episode in modern democracies, in relation to which the Electoral Justice has been urged to reserve its close attention, given the repercussions in the elective process for the intricate relationship between politics and religion.
Due to the recurrence of such cases, as well as so many others from organized civil society, the judge must be very attentive, based on the current normative system, to strictly restrain excessive interferences that compromise the freedom of faith and equality of candidates’ chances in the elective dispute.
