COMPARISON BETWEEN THE OFFICIAL DISCOURSE AND THE PRAXIS OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION (NATO)

Abstract: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is, overall, a military international alliance whose official goals are the mutual protection of its members and respect for the Charter of the UN. However, since its foundation, its actions have not corresponded with this discourse. Instead, it promotes interventions in the international scenario that violate Human Rights but correspond with the US interests. Aiming to prove this assumption, this research opposes the official discourse and the historical praxis of NATO, comparing some articles of the Washington Treaty with the interventions in the Suez crisis, the Iraq invasion, and the Libia bombing.
