Abstract

The sizing of sanitary sewer systems, according to ABNT standard NBR 8160:1999, allows the application of two different methods: the Hunter Contribution Unit (HCU) and the hydraulic method. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the results obtained by applying both methods to determine the pipes diameter of the plumbing sewage system. Evaluations were carried out covering three different sanitary environments, simulated in a residential building, with one housing unit per floor, considering 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 standard floors. In the proposed study, the sizing of discharge and sewage branches, waste stack pipe, building sewer pipe and sewer lateral pipe, was analyzed. The recurrence of the HCU sizing method in determining diameters greater than those defined by the hydraulic method was observed, indicating the tendency to oversize the pipelines. The results also showed the occurrence of situations that indicate the need for adjustments in the regulations and manufacturing standards for sanitary wares e fittings, especially when applying the hydraulic method.
