The power from the pulpit

In Portugal and Brazil, the pulpit was the place for the dissemination of religious doctrine, but also served to the development and expression of the collective mentality; since both the physical equipment and the verbal discourse of the church served to broadcast taste, plastic values, and symbolic representations and, at various times, the defense of certain political positions. The pulpit itself, the ecclesiastical furniture from where these speeches were proclaimed, displays the aesthetic trends of each era, and above all serves to support a rich symbolic language that affirms the dignity of the preacher as well as its fidelity to the doctrinal tradition of the church and to the monarchy.
