This study presents an analysis of the process of lexical creation in the Brazilian indigenous language Tuparí in relation to the names given to concepts from non-indigenous culture that have been incorporated into the culture of the Tuparí people. To do this, we used data taken from entries in the work “O léxico do Tuparí: proposta de um dicionário bilíngue” (The Tuparí lexicon: a proposal for a bilingual dictionary) by Alves 2004. Firstly, a synthesis is made of studies that deal with the process of naming and the process of categorization, in order to situate the activity of naming concepts apprehended by man. After presenting these theoretical studies, there is an explanation of the ways in which the Tuparí language names new concepts. This shows the creativity of the Tuparí people in naming new concepts from non-indigenous culture and their loyalty to their own language.
