As categorias gramaticais que conhecemos nas modernas línguas indo--europeias nem sempre correspondem à s que poderemos encontrar em línguasde outras famílias. Certas categorias que para nós parecem imprescindíveis,como, v. g., as de gênero e de número, ou, mais ainda, a de tempo, nãose encontram em muitas línguas; por outro lado, ocorrem frequentementecategorias que desconhecemos e das quais jamais sentimos necessidade.
