“From a white bird’s prompt flight”: A study on the memory within Lavoura arcaica and Nur na escuridão

This study aims at establishing a parallel between Salim Miguel’s novel Nur na escuridão (Miguel, 2004) and Raduan Nassar’s novel Lavoura arcaica (Nassar, 1982), in what regards time, memory and past. My hypothesis is that there are, in both novels, different times interwoven within the narrators’ stream of consciousness, and the analytical tread of this investigation follows such confusion, which is inherent to the unprogressive functioning of memory. The analysis demonstrates how time and memory prove to be fundamental for characters’ construction of identity to effectively take place in the narratives, because both concern the lives of subjects coming from other countries. This occurs chiefly through the understanding of these characters about their past, which is a pervasive theme both for the lives of narrators and, especially, for the lives of their parents. Nur na escuridão (Miguel, 2004) and Lavoura arcaica (Nassar, 1982) give time and memory the role of protagonists; and it is this protagonism that emerges from the main findings of the study herein proposed.
