This essay proposes to interpret the short story “The audacious navigator” (Partida do audaz navegante) as a specular transformation of “The third bank of the river” (A terceira margem do rio) — both published in Primeiras Estórias (1962) by João Guimarães Rosa — and as a cosmopolitical variation of Pamela Travers’ best-selling novel Mary Poppins (1934). The comparative and structural reading of these texts will point to sociopolitical issues in the literary approach of a single mother (of “daughters orphaned by a living father”) in charge of a curiously “against the State” (sensu Clastres, [1974] 2003) family regime. What political relations would Rosa establish in “The audacious navigator” between a single mother and her non-state matriarchy?
