Doubt as tradition: a poetics of distrust in the works of Ana Martins Marques
Keywords:
Rainer Maria Rilke; Carlos Drummond de Andrade; Ana Martins Marques; doubt; modern Brazilian poetryAbstract
This article starts from a reflection on the relationship between post-war Brazilian poetry and the conception of the poet found in the works of the Austrian author Rainer Maria Rilke, to suggest how, especially in the case of the poetry of Carlos Drummond de Andrade, there is in Brazil a modern anti-rilkean tradition, which we suggest to be constituted by ideas of suspicion, doubt, and distrust. Next, we dwell on the works of the contemporary Brazilian poet Ana Martins Marques, seeking to show how her poetry is also part of this tradition, particularly concerning the doubt regarding poetry’s ability to name the world.
