Language varieties in the translation of ancient comedy: About the various ways of laughing at difference

Assuming the importance that academic discussions have been recognizing in debates about difference and alterity, this text intends to consider the ways in which laughter and language can be socially situated in relation to these questions. For this, I propose general considerations about certain social dimensions of laughter and language, as ways of affirming certain values. Then, I analyze specific cases of use (or non-use) of different language varieties as a way of provoking laughter in the translations of an- cient comedy to contemporary Portuguese. I focus on translations of the following pie- ces by Aristophanes: Acharnians (translated by Ana Maria César Pompeu, in 2014, and by Maria de Fátima de Sousa e Silva, in 1980) and Lysistrata (translated by MilloÌ‚r Fernandes, in 2003; Adriane da Silva Duarte, in 2005; Ana Maria César Pompeu, in 2010; and Trajano Vieira, in 2011). More than advancing conclusive evaluations on such translations, the purpose of this text is to promote the debate on theory and practice of theatrical translation in Brazil, especially in its always delicate and difficult task of expressing laughter through language, always respecting diffe- rence and alterity.
