In this interview, Hugo Rodas revisits the two stagings of Eugéne Ionesco’s Rhinoceros he directed: first with the group TUCAN (Teatro Universitário Candango), in 2003, and then with ATA (Agrupação Teatral Amacaca), 17 years later. Hugo comments on the glaring currentness of Ionesco’s text in Brazil nowadays and assesses the evolutionary leap between both stagings, which have in common the millimeter precision in the actors’ body work, making the play work like a Swiss watch. It also reveals how he developed a facial mask technique under the influence of the seventh art, and why he attributes the er- ror a sacred importance.
