Abstract

Decolonial strategies and challenges of South Africa’s rainbow youth in Spilt Milk by Kopano Matlwa

Abstract: Books written by South-African writers underwent restrictions in publication during apartheid. After the end of state segregation, however, many of such works emerged, examining South-Africa’s past and present. The situation of post-apartheid society is, for instance, the focus of Spilt Milk (2010), a novel authored by Kopano Matlwa. This paper aims to demonstrate that in her narrative the author shows the dynamics of racial conflicts still prevalent in her society, featuring different processes of coloniality and strategies of decoloniality in the relationships among characters, which makes her novel a ‘third space’ of cultural hybridity and conciliation.
