This article compares aspects of the formative process of Brazilian literature with those of other Western literatures, in the Old and New Worlds, and examines certain peculiarities of Brazilian nationality, with the aim of identifying their effects on Antonio Candido’s concepts of formation and literary system, and demonstrating that the insistence on the nation as the unit of analysis limits the usefulness of these concepts in other contexts.
