The pragmatic turn in the social sciences brought a reinvigorated concern with the place of practice in the production and reproduction of the social world. In this paper we seek to situate this movement in the intellectual and historical context to which it sought to respond and to explore a relevant contrast within it. This is what we might call the contrast between synthesis proposals -- which thought of practice as a way of escaping or resolving dichotomies in the social sciences -- and theories that, recovering the contribution of classical pragmatism, revisit practice in order to think about processes of composition -- of bodies, of goods and, in a broader sense, of worlds. To elucidate the issues raised by this newer strand of the pragmatic turn, we examine how ethics/morality was approached by some of its most prominent authors.
