The aim of this article is to address Erving Goffman's theoretical and methodological creativity based on the study of the notion of shame in his work. The article develops a conceptual discussion with researchers and scholars who have dedicated themselves to the study of embarrassment and shame in his work in order to distinguish his contributions to sociological analysis. The study of the notion of shame in Goffman proves to be a privileged key to understanding how the author positions himself theoretically regarding the issue of social order. As an apparently unpretentious and discreet theme in Goffman's work, the notion of shame contributes to refining sociological analysis by taking us to the heart of his theory on social order. Shame operates as part of the social rules that manifest themselves as expectations, and is related to the fear of exclusion, social labeling, and the consequences of small or large ruptures in these social expectations. This theme shows how intimacy is socially produced by embarrassments and micro-constraints that affect individuals and society. Goffman's attention to social microstructure directs sociology methodologically toward a more nuanced understanding o social life.References
