Abstract

A discussion of the origins of private and public property since the French Revolution leads to the various theoretical propositions which relate the matter to the problems of liberty and equality. Based on this discussion, the author analyses the question as it emerges before the Brazilian Constitucional Assembly of 1986. Placing the property question at the center of the debate on political regime and the principal values of democracy, the analysis seeks to demonstrate that if property is unequally distributed, social power will be so in the same way.
