Analytical Modeling for Cable Dynamics in Underwater Application

Cables are widely used in marine structures, more specifically in the oil and marine industries. Umbilical cables used in Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), risers, towing, mooring or anchoring for floating structures are examples of important applications. Developing dynamic models for such structures in real application situations is always a motivating scientific challenge. In this sense, the present work proposes an adaptation in the classical analytical development of the vibrating string dynamics, restricting the movement to the vertical plane and applying to the case of a cable suspended by two floating platforms, so that the dynamics of the cable evolves in underwater environment. The analytical model is discretized using finite differences. Simulations showed good results in qualitative analysis, consistent with the physically expected. Graphic animation software has been developed for better visualization of simulation results. The analysis of the animations identified a good sense of physical reality.
