The House of Twelve Windows and the Theater of Memory of Life in Bahia's Caatinga During the 20th Century

Abstract

Living in the caatinga of Bahia in the early 20th century required adaptation to the climate and biome, generating a specific materiality represented by architecture, fur-niture and other utensils made of earth, wood, leather and iron. Much of this cultural heritage was neglected, ruined and disappeared. The restoration of the “House of 12 Windows” located in Barro Vermelho, Curaçá District, Bahia included, as far as pos-sible, the preservation of construction techniques, the ambiance through the recons-truction of the interiors and the household items existing in the community, constitu-ting a theater of Memory.
