By the hands of Moises Patrício: resistance, art and religiosity

Abstract

This article aims to reflect on the processes of being, relating African-based religions and Brazilian contemporary art. To this end, we established a theoretical dialogue with the concept of coloniality and established hegemonic standards, understanding the concealment and prejudice imposed on the culture, religiosity and aesthetics of black populations. Through the artistic work and biographical journey of Moisés Patrício, a black artist from São Paulo, who through different languages (painting, photography, sculpture and performance) raises questions about the place occupied by the black population in the different fields of our society (art, politics, religion, consumption, among others) to understand the potential of black/African traditions in contemporary art.
