This article discusses the presence of literary and iconographic elements from the Middle Ages in François Bourgeon’s graphic novel Les Compagnons du Crépuscule. It is pointed out, at first, what are the specificities of francophone comic books in regard to their portrayals of the Middle Ages, and how these specificities are indebted to older ways of portraying the Middle Ages in French culture. The articule discusses, then, how these portrayals are combined to the fantasy literary genre, of British origin, to shape the Middle Ages of some French comics, including Les Compagnons du Crépuscule. It is discussed, finally, how its author, building upon the fantasy genre, the French medievalist tradition and that domain of medieval imagination known as marvelous, combines them in a manner that gives new meanings to his medieval sources and enables his work to transcend its influences.
