Arts Based Research (ABR), and Arts Based Educational Research (ABER), are recent research methodologies in the academic milieu, but are also primary and complex forms of constructing knowledge that precede language and science. Being ancient forms of constructing knowledge and knowing and at the same time the last one to be credited in the academy, there are tensions and conflicts that are associated to art and artist modern western conceptions. In order to discuss ABR and ABER aspects this article tackles questions that arise about the role of imagination and poetics and the coincident role of subject, object and reader in research. In that aim we connect ABR and ABER author’s ideas and present three postgraduate art research experiences from artists Jorge Menna Barreto, Leísa Sasso and Narda Avarado, whose research elucidates the questions. Finally this article argues, based in the research experiences, that ABR and ABER methodologies can contribute in a singular way to academic research, but it is necessary to reterritorialize art and artist conceptions.
