The Logical Reasoning of Deaf Subjects Who Use Sign or Oral Language
Keywords:
Deafness, Logical reasoning, Oral/sign languageAbstract
The aim of this study was to compare the ability of deaf and normal subjects from 14 to 20 years of age in
solving syllogistic problems with known, unknown and contrary fact contents. Premises were presented to half of the subjects
of each group within a context of make-believe play or in an ordinary verbal mode. For each group of subjects the problems
were presented in its linguistic variety: Brazilian sign language and Portuguese oral language. All responses were coded in two
ways: for response correctness and for the type of justification given for the response. The results showed that deaf subjects
(sign language and oral language users) as well as normal subjects could solve the problems adopting a theoretical attitude even
when the verbal mode was used and the contents were unknown or contrary to their empirical experiences.
