THE SOCIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE PSYCHOLOGIST AND THEIR PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES IN MIDDLE-CLASS AND LOWER-CLASS IN VITÓRIA - ES
Abstract
This paper aimed at the identification of the social
representations with respect to psychologists and their professional
activities in two different social classes. The study was conducted with 60
subjects (30 of lower-class and 30 of middle-class) who were interviewed
about the psychologists and their activities. The results showed that the
clinical model of professional activity serves as the basic element in the
production of the social representations of the classes investigated and
demonstrated that the majority of the lower-class subjects have no
representations of the object investigated due to total lack of knowledege of
what a psychologist is. The results are discussed by poiting out some
conditions of social representations production and its implications for the
professional and for the Psychology courses.
