In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the first "Mafalda" cartoon by Argentine cartoonist Quino, the RELAC - Revista Latino-Americana de Criminologia  announce the release of a Special Edition featuring scientific articles that explore a wide range of criminology topics through the lens of comic art (including graphic novels, cartoons, and comic strips) created by Latin American artists or interpreted from a Latin American perspective. Recognized as a popular art form with significant social and cultural impact, the ninth art — commonly known as comic books — serves as a vibrant medium for critical thought, facilitating the dissemination of ideas and sometimes highlighting the violence perpetuated by arbitrary and selective punitive measures. "Mafalda" exemplifies this rich tradition of Latin American artistic expression, encouraging readers to engage in critical reflection on various regional issues shaped by colonialism and the geopolitical realities of the Global South. The intersection of scientific and artistic languages fosters a connection between academia and society, translating complex concepts into accessible cultural expressions that address local social issues linked to the disparities arising from discrimination based on race, gender, and social class, particularly those affecting criminal justice systems. To help build this bridge between critical criminological discourse and the dissemination of knowledge through comic art, we invite authors to submit scientific articles that, drawing from Latin American comic art or viewed through the lens of the Global South, address topics such as: a) abuse of power and authoritarianism by police forces; b) selective primary and secondary criminalization based on ethnic-racial, social class, and gender criteria; c) economic, social, and cultural inequalities and their effects on access to criminal justice; d) the functioning of criminal justice system entities; e) the (in)efficacy of public security policies in Latin America; f) the (in)efficacy of the prison system and measures for de-incarceration; g) institutional violence and the victimization of vulnerable groups.
