In the book "Multitudes Agroecológicas", Agroecology is presented as the main alternative to the structural crisis of Capitalism. According to the author Omar Felipe Giraldo, through it we will be able to overcome the culture of scarcity. One of the strategies for overcoming this is the culture of sharing the surplus, just as Planet Earth shares all the wealth of its natural resources. Another strategy would be the rediscovery of our potential and abilities, characteristic of Homo habilis, which would result in a fissure in the current capitalist system. He alludes to hierarchical structures, highlighting the need to organize ourselves in a more horizontal way, and uses the representation of roots, where several branches connect to a common point and this point of convergence would occur through communication.
Agroecology, with its potential for restoring ecosystems and mainly simplifying the way of living on this planet, is presented utopianly as the salvation of the human species and so many others that cohabit this planet. This is the idea brought by the book Multitudes Agroecológicas, which has been present in recent years on the tables of government officials and in forums on “Climate Emergencies”. In other words, utopia is becoming reality and academia has contributed to this understanding.
It is a paradigm shift and this takes time, and time is something we no longer have. We need to focus as soon as possible on biodiverse agri-food systems, on the restoration of degraded ecosystems, on the production of green energy from biomass, and in this new paradigm, Agroecology in its various manifestations occupies a central position.
