All Men Are Mortal (1946) tells the story of a twentieth-century french actress - Régine - who is described as an envious person who wishes she could interfere in the lives of everyone and everything - and a thirteenth-century count - Raymond Fosca - who is said to have been king of the city of Carmona and consumed the elixir of immortality. Both dramas reflect Beauvoir's particular interest in describing how resounding immortality is and that, in trying to dominate the whole world and act universally in the lives of all people, Fosca would have felt in his flesh and soul the absurdity of his ambition: indifferent to others, mortal and finite, he intended to act in the evolution of history itself as a whole and yet forgot that this history is led by free people with different goals. This is the reason for this review.
