Abstract

The concept of hieroglyph is an original Diderot’s contribution to the discussion of the relationship between language and thought. If, on the one hand, the language was conceived as a reflection of thought, following a linear and successive path, there would be in the examples of poetic hieroglyph signs of a use of verbal language which overcomes these limitations of expression. The poet, searching for an intense expression of his ideas to the reader, overcomes the literal use of the words taking the sensorial and semantic resources of language. The reflection on the expression of thought is in the presentation of the Letter on the Deaf and Dumb, in how Diderot leads the reader through the analysis of examples of art works using the imagination, through the deaf and dumb character, questioning or rehearsing answers for explore its limits and possibilities.
