Abstract

Our objective in this article is only to present ”“ not to defend ”“ the main Feuerbach’s thesis found in his most famous work, “The essence of christianity” (1841), especially the thesis that God is an unconscious and involuntary projection of the essential attributes of the human nature. According to him, God does not possess external or independent existence from man, being only the objectified human nature, confused as a transcendent essence. Therefore, we will demonstrate that the development of this thesis culminate, for Feuerbach, in the revelation of the main “secrets” and “contradictions” of christianity, allowing men to “reappropriate” their alienated essence in God. Developing this presupposition, Feuerbach presents the central role of the imagination in religion, its relation with the desires and feelings of the human heart, as well as the happiness as the ultimate goal of religion. Therewith, the philosopher intends to prove that men is the principle, the center and the end of religion, and that religion can be totally reduced to anthropology.
