Abstract

This interview was conducted with Margareth da Silva Pereira (MP) and Romão Veriano da Silva Pereira (VP) on 12 October 2023, in Rio de Janeiro, by Mario Luís Carneiro Pinto de Magalhães (MM) and Elane Ribeiro Peixoto (EP). It had the invaluable participation of Leandro de Sousa Cruz and Ana Flávia Rêgo Mota, who did the hard work of transcribing it and clearing up doubts with efficient research.

It's not easy to introduce Professor Margareth da Silva Pereira – we admit it's a task of enormous responsibility. Professor Margareth's professional career includes a degree in Architecture in Rio de Janeiro and a degree in Urban Planning in France at the University of Paris VIII (Vincennes). Her studies and research in the history of architecture and urbanism are extensive and have been published in books, articles, conferences and curated exhibitions. Her academic work has given her national and international recognition, with her presence at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Federal University of Bahia, PUC Campinas, in France, England and Colombia. Among Margareth Pereira’s many works are those in the series “Nebulae of the Urban Thought,” a work whose organization she shares with Paola Berenstein Jacques (volumes I, II, and III) and Josianne Cerasoli (volume III). As stated in the introduction to the first book in the series, this is a theoretical-methodological contribution on the different ways of thinking and narrating the history of urbanism. From work developed over many years, Margareth and Paola organized the website Cronologia do Pensamento Urbanístico, an initiative that has become indispensable for students and researchers. Coordinator of the Laboratory of Urban Studies (LeU) - Urban Culture and Urban Thought in Brazil and Professor of the Postgraduate Programme in Urbanism (PROUR) at the FAU-UFRJ, our interviewee brings together young researchers who share interests, readings, research and moments of relaxation, animated by her own joy and enthusiasm. Our initial intention was to interview Margareth Pereira to hear her talk about the time when she was studying urbanism at the University of Paris VIII. We wanted to understand the climate of the time and the role played by Françoise Choay in this unusual institution, which was open to immigrants and workers and through which important names in the French cultural scene, from Foucault to Deleuze, passed. During our conversation, Romão, Margareth's partner, joined us. He had also been a student at Paris VIII. An architect at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Romão complemented her memories of the period with his own. Little by little, he asked questions and provided information, becoming one of our interviewees and making our conversation richer than we had imagined.

We would like to thank Margareth and Romão for the opportunity and time they gave us.

We hope that readers of this double interview will enjoy it.
