Abstract

The collection of ex-votos of the Ex-Votos Research Center (NPE) is a valuable repository for the study of social communication, the arts, and religious, cultural, and social practices. This interdisciplinary approach integrates research, preservation, and education, encompassing a diversity of objects donated by museums and sanctuaries and collected during fieldwork. The collection exemplifies the intersection between material culture and intangible heritage, promoting dialogues between history, art, religion, and public health. Aligned with the guidelines of the National Museum Education Policy (PNEM), the NPE highlights educational initiatives through heritage education, digital platforms, and practical conservation activities. By exploring the pedagogical potential of ex-votos, this article highlights their relevance for collective memory, cultural diversity, and identity formation, advocating for their expanded use in academic and non-academic contexts.

Author Biographies

Silvana Bastos Paula, Universidade Federal da Bahia

PhD in Information Science (2024). Master in Information Science (2019). Undergraduate in Library Science and Documentation. Graduated in Archives (2014). Federal Public Servant (2016). Participated in the Assembly and Computerization Project of the Documentary and Photographic Collection of the Vila Velha Theater (2010-2011). Scholarship holder in the research project: "Factory of Ideas Program: Innovation in Postgraduate Studies and Creation of the Digital Archive of Black and African Memory in Brazil". Where he developed research, treatment and indexing activities of sound, audiovisual and iconographic documents in digital format on the website of the Digital Museum of Black and African Memory - Estação Bahia (2013). Member of the Study Group on Digital Culture, Representation and Information (CRIDI) (2015-2019) Member of the research group Study Group on the Cybermuseum (GREC). He maintains an interest in research related to memory, documentary preservation, digital documents, iconographic, audiovisual, access and permanent archive.
Alexandra Santos Ribeiro, Universidade Federal da Bahia

Master's student in Museology at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) with research focused on ex-votive narratives of Bahian Sanctuaries. Currently, she participates in the GREC/UFBa research group. She has a degree in Vernacular Letters from the same University (2013) with scientific initiation through the study group in cognitive semantics, associated with the program for the history of the Portuguese language (PROHPOR), experience in the area of Cognitive Linguistics.
Fernanda Assunção Camelier Mascarenhas, Universidade Federal da Bahia

Graduated in Dentistry from the Federal University of Bahia (1991). Specialist in Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics from ABO-BA. (1998) Specialist in Functional Orthopedics of the Jaws from CFO. (2003) Has experience in the area of Dentistry, with an emphasis on Orthodontics. Undergraduate in Museology UFBA, entry in 2020.1. She has been a volunteer researcher for the Ex-votos Project since 2021. Member of the Cybermuseum Study Group (GREC) and member of the Study Group in Museological Documentation (GEDOM).
