This article brings a brief discussion a dialogue between two of the more important Brazilian linguists, Mattoso Câmara Jr. e Aryon Dall’Igna Rodrigues. Câmara Jr. considers Typology as a viable and autonomous methodological path in face of the fragility data necessary required by a rigorous genetic classification. (Câmara Jr. 1959), while as for Rodrigues, a genetic classification, when conducted with rigor, is less vulnerable to partial data than typological classification based on dependent structural interferences dependent on uncertain translations. His central argument is that the “non-cultural” lexicon – body parts, natural phenomena and numerals – constitute a stable nucleon capable of bringing trustable historical evidence, protecting the analyst from typological “false positives” that may be induced by linguistic contact or chance. Rodrigues answer to Câmara Jr.is brief, but instructive about methodological procedures to be applied in the linguistic studies of Brazilian Indigenous languages.
