This paper aims at describing the main linguistic mechanisms used in the Maxakalí language to name and categorize the species of animals and plants known by the native speakers of Maxakalí. In the analysis were considered morphophonemic, morphosyntactic and lexico-semantic aspects of animal and plant names of the language that are productive to the ethnozoological and ethnobotanic lexicon of the language. The analysis and consequent description of these mechanisms besides contributing to the description and documentation of the language and of the ethnobiological knowledge of the Maxakalí people, will be useful for a better description of the mechanism of word formation of the languages of the Maxakalí family and also those of the Macro-Jê branch.
