Abstract

This essay presents a comparative analysis of the main approaches to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) proposed by Fairclough (1989, 2001, 2003, 2010, 2012), Wodak (2001, 2015, 2021), and van Dijk (1999, 2001, 2009, 2016). Convergences and divergences between their theoretical perspectives are discussed, including the role of discourse in maintaining and transforming unequal power relations. Additionally, recent contributions are addressed, such as the argumentative dimension by Fairclough and Fairclough (2012), the historical dimension discussed by van Dijk (2021), and the "shameless normalization" analyzed by Wodak (2022a). The essay concludes that these approaches can be used individually or complementarily, depending on the complexity of the issue analyzed, especially in contexts of political crises and digital transformations.
