Around the table as a place for the transmission of heritage language and culture

This article aims to propose a reflection on the role of interactions around the table in the preservation and intergenerational transmission of the Heritage Language. The data were generated with members of the Conci-Maggio family nucleus, considering the sui generis context that characterizes it, since, after 65 years of the parents’ arrival in Brazil, Italian is still the language of daily communication between the four generations. In the Introduction, the context and methodology of the research are detailed, as well as the concept of Heritage Language that guides the work. Then, a discussion about bilingualism and family policies is proposed. In the third part, based on the definition of Heritage Cuisine (AZEVEDO; ORTALE, 2019), a preliminary analysis of routine interactions related to the acts of growing ingredients, preparing dishes and gathering at the table is presented. And, finally, the main ideas of the text are resumed, as well as the potential of everyday actions with regard to policies for preserving the Heritage Language.
